BMW reveals latest all-electric concept – the iNext

The German brand’s newest design project will go into full production in 2021 and will be a follow-up to the iX3.

BMW has taken the covers off its latest concept model – the iNext – which will be the brand’s flagship for technological advancements when it goes into production.

The latest all-electric concept from the German manufacturer builds on the design first laid out by the i Vision Dynamics concept from 2017, with blue detailing featuring throughout the vehicle.

At the front, the iNext includes the interlinked dual-kidney grille found on recent BMW concepts, light-up blue accents and slim-line headlights that form part of the brand’s four-eyed front end design. The glass elements, such as the windscreen and side windows, are integrated seamlessly into the concept’s body.

BMW has given the concept suicide doors at the rear with no B-pillars to offer a more open-plan and accessible interior, while the large 24-inch alloy wheels along with short overhangs give the built-up model a sporty look.

Cameras are used instead of wing mirrors, while touch-sensitive body panels are in place of regular door handles to give a much sleeker design. The back-end employs sleek brake lights, while the body itself has a copper finish with contrasting black detailing.

Drivers can choose from two driving modes – Boost and Ease – with the latter offering an autonomous mode which can be teamed with the ‘Exploration Mode’ that gives occupants suggestions of landmarks and places to see.

Coming with a simple, open-plan interior, the iNext is built with intelligently-sourced materials that work alongside the all-electric powertrain to create a sustainable model.

With the smaller iX3 going into production in 2020, the production version of the iNext will join it on sale in 2021 and is likely to come with a range close to 300 miles. Its main competitors will be Jaguar’s I-Pace, the Audi e-tron and the Mercedes EQC.
