What’s new on the facelift Mercedes GLC?

Here’s a look at the key changes that have taken place on the new SUV

Since Mercedes introduced the GLC in 2015, this mid-size SUV has proven to be especially popular, and it’s now one of the firm’s best-selling models. Slotting neatly between the GLA and more luxurious GLE, the GLC rivals models like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, and it’s recently been upgraded as part of a mid-life facelift.

Here’s five key changes that have been introduced on the latest model.

Upgraded infotainment system

A key change that’s happened since the original GLC debuted in 2015 is the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system – or MBUX for short. It allows for a more connected driving system, with the screen size increasing to 12.3 inches on the top-spec model.

It also offered an augmented reality satellite navigation – using video to give clearer directions, while also offering gesture controls.

It’s a big advancement for the GLC, and one that brings the SUV up to the technology levels of rivals.

Addition of new four-cylinder engines

On this latest Mercedes GLC, it features a new line-up of four-cylinder 2.0-litre engines – replacing the 2.1-litre diesel engine that you found in the model previously. It offers improved refinement, as well as better performance and lower running costs.

Mild-hybrid technology has also been introduced to the GLC, which helps to increase fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions.

New driver assistance technology

Mercedes has always pioneered when it comes to safety tech and the latest GLC has made a big leap forward when it comes to driver assistance technology.

New leading features available on the facelifted model includes steering assist, which can swerve to avoid collisions, rather than just brake like most systems currently do. The adaptive cruise control can also use a combination of radars, cameras and maps to slow down the car for corners and junctions, too – minimising the risk of incident further.

Revised styling

Mercedes hasn’t gone wild in terms of styling tweaks to the GLC, as it’s quite a handsome model anyway.

That said, a number of changes have been introduced to help modernise the model. Particular highlights are the new 3D LED rear lights, which give the car a distinctive look on the road. New LED daytime running lights have also been implemented at the front. A range of new alloy wheels have also been added to the line-up, too.

New performance tech on AMG variants

While the GLC might be seen as one of the more sensible SUVs on sale, all is transformed when the Mercedes-AMG division gets to work its magic on it. With a 4.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, the GLC produces an impressive 469bhp and 503bhp in ‘S’ guise. The engines largely remain the same, though the firm has introduced a host of new technologies to the models.

An electronically-controlled locking differential is a highlight – allowing for a more involving driving experience, along with a new ‘Slippery’ setting in the AMG Dynamic Select program. Specific AMG dials also feature as part of the standard MBUX system, too.

The updated GLC is on sale now, with prices starting from £40,620.
