Just like Fatboy Slim in the 90s, Jeep is back once again for the Renegade — having introduced a facelifted version of the compact SUV for 2018.
Originally introduced in 2013, the Italian-built machine has so far struggled to become a regular face on UK roads, but a new injection of funkiness might just change that.
It’s got a fresh face, a refreshed range of engines and some updated kit inside for this year. Here, we take a dive in to see what’s new for the Renegade.
LED lighting
For 2018, Jeep has brought new, eye-catching LED headlights to the Renegade.
They replace the regular halogen lamps on the old car, now bringing a thin circular outline that looks seriously cool and brings a new identity to the firm’s range.
These new-look units will also appear on the new Wrangler coming later this year.
New engine options
New petrol engines are available on the Renegade, with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit starting the range — developing 118bhp — alongside a 1.3-litre four-cylinder motor capable of either 150bhp or 180bhp depending on trim selected.
Diesel engines remain the same at 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre form but have been tweaked slightly to deliver better efficiency. As for gearbox options, there’s a choice of a six-speed manual, six-speed dual-clutch or nine-speed automatic.
Updated Uconnect
Jeep’s Uconnect has been given a refresh in the latest Renegade. The hardware features a new processor to deliver a more responsive system — which can be displayed on a five-, seven- or 8.4-inch screen depending on your trim.
The new high-definition displays also now allow for pinch-and-zoom on the navigation display along with drag-and-drop customisable menus. Uconnect also offers support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
More safety gear
The new Jeep Renegade is the latest machine to take on a ton of safety gear to bring even more security on the road.
It features lane departure warning and speed assist with traffic sign recognition as standard, while adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring can be added as optional extras.
Later this year, parking assistance will also join the range.
Retains the funkiness
One thing that hasn’t changed is the level of funk the Jeep Renegade offers.
It’s one of the more stylish machines in the compact SUV market, bringing the trademark rugged Jeep aesthetic to a small package that looks at home both in the city and off-road.
